Putting a Race Horse Down…

As explained by Professor Gary Francione:

“By applying the language that we hear when injured race horses are ‘put down’ in a context involving a human, we get an interesting insight into how even those who claim to ‘love’ animals often commodify them and regard them exclusively as means to our ends.”

Gay Exorcism

I found this very creepy article today. I didn’t watch the video out of fear that it would give me the willies.

“Seen the video? It’s of a “gay exorcism” performed on a 16-year-old boy; he lies writhing on the floor, apparently convulsing as elders of the Manifested Glory Ministries from Bridgeport, Connecticut, attempt to cast out the “homosexual demon” from his body…..”

If you would like to read the rest of the article or watch the video click here http://www.care2.com/causes/human-rights/blog/dont-defend-gay-exorcisms/

Personally, I think some people take the Bible waaaayyy too seriously. It’s ok to believe of course. But I think too many people hate themselves because they misunderstand the Bible or take it too literally. I’m not Christian/Catholic, but if I were I would probably believe that God made me the way I am, so it can’t be bad. And from there I would just try to be the best me that I can be. I think if your religion makes you hate yourself, you’re probably doing it wrong.

Bone Health

“Despite our society’s seemingly obsessive focus on calcium intake, studies repeatedly show that the cultures with the highest dairy consumption, and thus the highest calcium intake, exhibit the greatest incidence of osteoporotic fracture. This observation has led to the identification of a mysterious “international calcium paradox.” How is it that in the U.S. 1,000 to 1,500 mgs or more of calcium daily are considered necessary for maintaining bone health, while many other populations maintain strong bones with a calcium intake of 400 mg or less?

It turns out that calcium intake is only part of the equation, and that an appropriate dietary reference intake (DRI) for a given population depends on coexisting dietary, lifestyle and environmental factors. These include the balance between the total intake of other nutrients and the consumption of potentially bone-damaging substances such as excess salt, protein, alcohol, tobacco, fat, processed foods and sugar. The use of certain bone-depleting medications, the lack of sunlight, the presence of environmental toxins and even stress have deleterious effects on bones….”

Teen Kills Kitten in Oven; Faces 10-Year Sentence

“On June 3, ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Agents arrested Cheyenne Cherry, a 17-year-old resident of the Bronx, for allegedly killing a two-month-old kitten by burning her to death in an oven. In addition to cruelty to animals, Cherry was charged with multiple counts of burglary, arson and criminal mischief. Under New York State law, Cherry is considered an adult and faces more than 10 years in prison if convicted of all charges.

Cherry admits that she broke into the home of an ex-roommate on May 6 with the intent to “play a joke and mess up her apartment.” Cherry and an accomplice allegedly threw bleach on the walls of the apartment, slashed furniture and stole various items. Before leaving, the pair put the victim’s kitten, Tiger Lily, into the hot oven.

When police arrived at the Bronx apartment to investigate smoke complaints, Tiger Lily was found dead. Her remains were taken to ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, where veterinarians had to perform a necropsy to determine the sex of the badly burned kitten.

According to Joseph Pentangelo, Assistant Director of ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement, Cherry’s explanation for placing the kitten in the oven was simply: “I hate cats.”

If you know of a child or teen who is hurting animals, please report his or her behavior to the proper authorities—kids who assault animals may eventually act out on people. The ASPCA offers a list of ways to intervene when a child or teen displays dangerous behavior around animals.

To report animal cruelty in New York City, contact the ASPCA anonymous tip line at (877) THE-ASPCA. Visit our Report Cruelty FAQ to learn how to report cruelty elsewhere.”

I think ten years is too light of a sentence, and she probably won’t even serve ten years anyway. If we know she did it, and she admits she did, I say throw her in an oven and be done with it. Anyone sick enough to kill a kitten is incredibly dangerous. It’s not worth the risk to the rest of us to have this girl running around free ever again.

Go Shrimpless

“Today, nearly 70 percent of the world’s fisheries are fully fished or overfished, and about 60 billion pounds of fish, sharks and seabirds die each year as bycatch — animals caught accidentally as a result of wasteful fishing techniques. For every 1,000 of us who stop eating shrimp, we can save over 12,000 pounds of sea life per year.”

Homemade Dog Bones

“By making your own dog bones you are providing your pet with wholesome food and are assured that you are not feeding them animal byproducts of unknown origin. Keep your eyes out for dog bone cookie cutters; they are frequently sold in kitchen supply stores.

(Adapted from Rodale’s Book of Practical Formulas)

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 cup corn meal
  • 1/2 cup soy flour
  • 1/2 cup ground seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon linseed oil (available in health food stores)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup unsulfured molasses
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. Mix to blend. Add the liquid ingredients.

Stir, adding more milk if necessary to make a ball that can be kneaded and rolled out on a cutting board. Roll out dough, and cut out dog bone shapes using a cookie cutter or knife. Place on a well-greased baking pan, and bake at 350 F for 25-35 minutes, or until browned.”
