** This thread discusses the content article: H1N1 Vaccine Debate and Hand Sanitizer **

Some people want to take the H1N1 vaccine to be protected, after all a lot of people have died from H1N1!  The CDC recommends the vaccine for pregnant women, parents of babies under six months of age, and other groups.

But there is a lot of debate and conflicting information.

Some people are saying it is too new and has not been well tested.

I also heard on the news today that most of the vaccines contain mercury.  One doctor said the mercury level was safe, but I was under the impression that no level of mercury is safe, especially for pregnant women.  But I have also heard talk of mercury-free versions, so those may at least be available for pregnant women.

The vaccine is available in both a shot and a nasal spray.  Some sites say pregnant women can get either one, other sites say they should not get the nasal spray.

The vaccine apparently also has chicken eggs in it, so even high risk vegans may have qualms about using it, and it may not safe for people with egg allergies.

So it's kind of a pickle either way, and it's hard to know exactly what to believe!  I'm sure glad I am not in one of the groups recommended to get the vaccine right now because I'm really not sure what I would do (other than a bunch of research of course!).  If you're in one of the groups, I'd recommend talking to your doctor about it.  Don't be afraid to get a second opinion either, especially if you're pregnant.  Because whatever you do decide to do, you should at least be educated about it beforehand.

Be especially vigilant when it comes to washing your hands right now.  That simple action can do a lot to help keep you and everyone around you safe.

If you can't get to soap and water, use a hand sanitizer.  But be careful if you have teenagers.  Some teens have actually started drinking hand sanitizer to get a buzz due to the high alcohol content.  It's gotten so bad in some places that some schools no longer allow hand sanitizer or they allow it only under supervision.  So make sure your teen isn't drinking the stuff, check your school's current policy before having your teen bring the sanitizer to school, and look for alcohol-free sanitizers.  To read more on that, visit lifestyle.ca.msn.com/family-parenting/he...-documentid=22443528
