Front-Load Washers 2 Years, 6 Months ago
** This thread discusses the content article: Front-Load Washers **

Energy efficient front-loading washing machines are becoming pretty popular.  They use less water than top-loading machines.  They also leave your clothes dryer at the end of the spin cycle, and that means they don't need to spend as much time in your dryer, which saves you money and is better for the environment.

But some front-loading owners are complaining about a smell.  Apparently the front-loaders are sealed tighter than the top-loaders are.  After a wash in a top-loader, any leftover water can evaporate.  But after a wash in a front-loader, water sometimes just sits there.  That can lead to mold and a swampy smell.

Washers often have cleaning recommendations, something like running the washer with no clothes in it, with hot water, and with a cup of bleach every month.  That can keep mold down.  But using hot water, using bleach, and running an empty washer are all things that sort of defeat the purpose of having the front-loader.  I mean, most people get one to save money, save water, and be kind to the environment.

Vinegar might be a better alternative to the bleach.  And you may be able to just wash the rubber seal with a vinegar soaked rag rather than running the whole machine since the seal seems to be the main problem area for most.

It's also recommended that you take wet clothes out right away and leave the washer door open for a bit after doing a load.  That allows the inside of the washer to dry.  But that might not be an ideal solution for people with pets or small children since it can pose a safety issue.

Some people say they still have the problem even when they do everything right.  And some brands might have more problems than others.  So if you're in the market for a front-loader, make sure you do some research.

If you have questions, comments, or tips for other front-loading owners, feel free to share.
