A four year old boy was suspended from Pre-K because the school thought his shoulder length hair was too long and would be a distraction to other students.
Bloggers have been writing about it all over the place. Naturally, a lot of people find the school's decision bothersome. Girls are allowed to have long hair. Why would it be a distraction for a boy to have it?
The parents and boy like his long hair, but the school wasn't budging on their decision. Apparently they have since compromised, and the boy wears his hair braided and pinned up so that it looks short.
Personally, I would not want my child in that kind of sexist and narrow minded environment to begin with. So rather than compromising, I would have run like hell to a Pre-K that cares more about education than it does about forcing gender stereotypes onto kids.
Here are some articles about it: http://stayathomemoms.about.com/b/2010/01/16/four-year-old-boy-suspended-for-long-locks-may-leave-school.htm http://www.care2.com/causes/education/blog/four-year-old-suspended-from-school/
And this article is insane and should be included just to point how crazy people who support the school's decision probably are: http://christwire.org/2009/12/4-year-old-hippie-suspended-for-long-hair/
